Photo An Hour #2: 07/08

I had some really lovely feedback from my first 'Photo An Hour' post, so I thought I'd do another, it was another day off, where all I could do was personal admin, but it's also the day I had my interview for my new job, so it ended up being a pretty great day.

10am: It was pretty tough waking up, I've been so tired lately.

11am: Essentials / Little Cat not getting the concept of the open window, she's learnt quickly though.

12pm: Dippy egg for breakfast / Spot of nail-painting - both big deals in their own right.

1pm: Post / Photoshopping.

2pm: Interview outfit / Off to Newbury train station to get the train to Reading.

3pm: Reading.

4pm: On the way back to Newbury from my interview.

5pm: Spreading the good news.

6pm: Pizza to celebrate.

7pm: Moon attempting to cheat the batteries for my other Instax camera (which ended up not working).

8pm: To Sainsbury's for supplies.

9pm: Crazy Cores! / Checking out 'The Girl Who Became Three Boys', which was really stupid.

10pm: Hot drink/wind down time.

Tuesday Tabs #28

Howdy, I hope you're having as an amazing Tuesday as I am. It's been a year and almost a full month since I graduated and I've struggled and muddled my way through life ever since, with semi-exploitative but invaluable internships to my current, confidence-boosting not-what-I-want-to-be-doing-but-will-do-for-now minimum wage job. All that aside, I've grown as a person and am stronger than I've ever been, not that I have to worry about any of that now, because I finally have a really grown-up job!

It was coming to the point where I was on the verge of tears at the beginning of every other shift and I just didn't know what I was doing or where I wanted my life to go. Now I have an escape route and I can see the end, I'm going to be an 'Online Merchandiser' for a company in Reading. Not 100% on discretion right now, but I'll tell you this, I'm bloody excited. I had the interview and was rung while still on the way home, I actually hung up on the MD thanks to my silly touchscreen phone, but this is the best news I've had all year. Pizza tonight to celebrate!

Back to business, here are my favourite things from around the Internet this week. I was going to try and tie this into a 'birthday wishlist' kind of dealio as it's only 9 days until I'm the grand old age of 23, but there's too much going on and I never really know what I want anyway.
Michael Cho's comic-inspired artwork is awesome, I wish he did prints. His other art is pretty cool too, you can check out his Blogspot here.

Wire House Envelope Rack, Invotis Orange
Kind of hard to resist now these are on Fab.com with £4.50 off. I've been searching for the perfect envelope rack for a while as Moon just plonks his post everywhere and I'm almost just as bad, this would look so cute on our kitchen counter.

Beach High Waist Skirt, Love Ur Look
How cute is this skirt? Now I have an little excuse for a slight wardrobe expansion, I'm tempted. Love the simple waist detail!

Anorak Twin Rabbit Duvet Cover, Urban Outfitters
I wish Urban Outfitters weren't so stingey with their bed linen, I can't work out if this comes with pillow slips, as well as not having the cash, but this is one of my favourite patterns and I'd be all over it if the description wasn't so vague and if I was a single duvet kind of girl.

Turquoise Brimfield Bookcase, Urban Outfitters
Urban Outfitters announced their furniture range last week, and you should know by now I'm smitten for pretty interiors and these came as I'm looking for something in this kind of area. It's a little big for the flat but we are in need of more storage, I wish this came half the size, the colour is so nice.

Nearly forgot how good Tom The Lion is.

Paper Dress Necklaces, Hug A Porcupine via The Little Dröm Store
So adorable! I like the blue one best. ♥

Marathon La Sardina, Fototo
I've been using Charlotte's La Sardina for a couple of days and although I'm still making a decision, this is definitely the La Sardina I would want should I decide to get one. The images will definitely be the deciding factor but I'm not even halfway through my first roll yet.

  • Summer on Film on The Dainty Squid — Summer is always the perfect time to get back into film, I think I'll be taking 35mm to Reading to spare getting robbed. The quality of these images is great too, I definitely want to spend some more time working with film even more after seeing this.
  • White Layer Cake with Lemon Curd — This will be great for making those multi-coloured 'Pinterest/Tumblr' cakes, thanks to Wrapped Up In Rainbows for sharing.
  • Dinosaur Bunting from Sass & Belle — Super cute!
  • Home Sketchbook — This post from Goodnight Little Spoon on the sketchbook about her home she made for a class is really neat. An idea I might be stealing to fill up my own sketchbook, I need a little boost.
  • Eames Pens & Pencils Mug from Urban Outfitters — I already have so many mugs, but I keep seeing so many pretty ones around. I might start coyly smashing the ones we already have just to pick up beauts like this one.
  • The Pronunciation Manual — Hours of procrastinating fun to be had.

    All your tubing needs.

This is an afternoon well spent, not the finished product as that's a surprise between me and the company I did it for. Basically, Purple Door at the University of Portsmouth have found me a position as a Creative Lead within a Marketing company, pre-interview prep was essentially showing them what I could to on Indesign using a short brief they provided.

The brief was to create a postcard to go at a till in a builders merchant advertising a particular brand of copper tube for plumbing and heating contractors with the main incentive that if they 'like' the brand on Facebook, they can then enter a photo competition and be in the running for winning an iPad.

Here's hoping this is enough to impress them, I'm quite happy with it, obviously I had to do a bit of Google-image trawling but hopefully they'll see past that. Coincidently, earlier today I walked passed a builder's merchants, and they did in fact have post cards at the till, I've tried to make mine as different as possible. From what I saw available, they were mainly straight-forward text so I think that part was pretty successful. Thanks to some help from Moon I've got something a bit less 'obvious' than my initial idea.

Fingers crossed it was worth it. I'm so hungry now.

    Tuesday Tabs. #4

What a morning it's been, I've applied for five jobs and arranged two interviews for next week, all before I've even begun my internship with Shortlist tomorrow, bit crazy. I'm a little bit desperate for a bit of a life-change soon though, so it's really exciting. Both the interviews are for things that I'd really like to do too, so that's a real bonus, so chuffed!

Anyway, enough blabbing about jobs, this is a safe haven, free from stress etc.
Here are some great things I've found this week, some I even only found this morning.
Isn't this dress awesome? I don't think it's very practical but it's certainly a lovely way to recycle a map. Made by Annex as part of their Travel Wardrobe collection, each dress is unique and handmade from a vintage map

Cheese! Satchel, Jump from Paper, $80
This is a real life satchel from handbag designers Jump from Paper, their whole shop is full of similar neat designs that mess with your eyes.

Second impractical dress of the day, this time by artist Joy Kampia. Sadly this dress is a one-off and has now been sold but Joy is still taking commissions.

I kind of really love that HelloGiggles lets things like this happen.

    (via WAH Nails)
I've given this a go and it actually hasn't come out as badly as I thought, takes a lot of patience though, wouldn't recommend doing these if you're in a rush.

Dap Bros. - Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski and Walter Sobchak, The Big Lebowski (1998) by Henry the Worst

I actually thought this was a much better advert than the full-length Superbowl version. I wouldn't go as far as to say the full-length one is bad, as many others have, I just wouldn't say it has as much 'Ferris magic', although some of the references are 'so choice'. Who really cares if Matthew Broderick is milking a cash cow anyway? He was the coolest teenager to ever exist.

Giorgio 1982 & 2011 Paris. Back to the Future, Irina Werning (2010 onwards)
Part of an on-going series putting subjects back in the shoes of their past. Some of the images are spookily similar, others beautifully poignant.

I think it's very important that I put at least one cat-related thing on here. This is from Cat Versus Human and is available on a nice t-shirt.

    Link Love: ♥
  • Timeline Movie Maker — This pretty much does what it says, but it's a lot more impressive than you might think. Here's the link to my one to give you an idea. It's not hard to do anyway and another good way to procrastinate, plus you can pick theme music!
  • A Beautiful Mess — A lovely Typepad blog which posts all sorts of lovely craft ideas, including how to make floral boots, and DIY salad dressing.
  • Polyvore — This is for my own reference more than anyone else's. I have known about Polyvore for a long time but keep losing it, I probably won't even use it, but it's nice to know that now I can find it if I need to. If you don't know what it is, it's basically an incredibly easy way to make up clothes wish-lists/look-books from your favourite shops and designers, it's quite clever.
  • Hi My Name is Elliot Hasse — Sometimes job-hunting turns into a full-blown career, and it's no wonder when witty, creative people like Elliot Hasse are the people that graduates have to compete against. I wouldn't even know where to start if I made a CV like this.
  • Anxiety Cat — As I've mentioned a few times, my nerves aren't great right now but Anxiety Cat really puts things into perspective, and reminds me how ridiculous humans can be. I do find it strange that there are a couple of unrelated posts offering discount depression medication but I would hope that people are just looking for a fun meme rather than the former.
  • Eye Contact — A great collection of film stills of actors 'breaking the fourth wall', and generally making unintentionally pretty pictures. Naturally you can only find this kind of stuff on Tumblr.
  • Top 10 Business Card Designs
  • 5 Simple Ways to Get Your Work Out There
  • Another Graphic Design Graduate — The details of how I found this blog are a bit vague but I was feeling pretty low on the job from last week and this anonymous guy/girl took the words right out of my month. It's pretty interesting and talks about the highs and lows of being an seemingly eternal intern.

  • You may or may not have noticed that I've given in on the '30 day challenge' at the halfway hurdle, mainly because on further investigation the challenge was stupid and I don't have enough different friends that range from being 'shoulders to cry on' through to 'people who have always been there', it was lame. I'm an adult, I want to try and find one that involves taking photos of specific things for a set time period, if anyone could help me out that would be nice. :)

    708.

    This morning's work.

I think I'm going to go to the printers now and get about five done to post out, they're going to be A2 size but fold into an A4 booklet. I want to at least see how it will look in print. I thought I might really need to start grabbing some attention to get going places.

This has been suggested many times through many different platforms and I hope that it doesn't some how end up too samey in comparison to others. Essentially all I've really done is fancied up a standard CV.. but I think it has potential to look quite good. I may give it another go if these end up looking crap, this is just a rough draft, a kind of experiment.

I worry that it's a bit restricting in terms of what jobs I can apply for with it, but I think I'm going to try I'm aiming for publishers and digital agencies, it's worth a shot anyway.

    While boys play with toys...

In Cornwall and kind of but not really watching Long and Moon play Xbox, less than exciting. Just discovered my typing speed is very much solidly between 70-80wpm at 74wpm, so I may be eligible to earn some cash as a temporary typist for the next few weeks, which will be nice.

I've found a few things to share with you, also thought this would be a good time to tell you that I'm putting together a video diary of sorts for this trip, I think I have some nice footage so far. It will be first time I've really put my SLR's filming capabilities to the test so let's see how it comes together, I'm hoping I'll be able to upload it somewhere that doesn't tear apart quality.
Hope that you're getting used to the combination of wish-list and nice things! ♥
Although perhaps an unlikely X Factor fan, I am an X Factor fan nonetheless. I really like this cute series by photographer, Idil Sukan from when Olly Murs performed with The Muppets on the show. Did I mention I'm also a huge Muppets fan?

No. Yeah? Protest Poster, Urban Outfitters, £10
House display shelf, Urban Outfitters, £65
Love this blunt 'protest poster', I do have to take a step back though as it is somewhat tainted by the 'mass uniqueness' that comes with Urban Outfitters, not to mention the overpricing.

I can't wait to have the time, money and space to do projects like this.

Currently loving all things ModCloth, for once everything is mostly my thing and mostly in my price range.
I miss autumn, it was so much kinder than winter, especially Cornish winter.
Pumpkin Chocolate Bar Jacket, ModCloth, $82.99
Mild Meets Wild Coat, ModCloth, $64.99

The socks remind me of my dog socks.
    True Colorblock Tights, ModCloth, $23.99
Kindred Soles Socks in Intern, ModCloth, $7.99

Haven't found a dress that I was really into in ages, but this one's lovely and super-girly ♥
    Winning Streak Dress, ModCloth, $72.99

The Seal Sanctuary was bangin', looking forward to looking back on and editing the photos that I've taken so far and surprisingly looking forward to recomposing my portfolio, since harddrive recovery was a bust. After 9 hours everything was called fl578o96 or something to that effect and half of the files were corrupted. Photos were only 60KB max and also only managed to really recover all of Arrested Development and files named from M-T, maybe I wasn't patient enough, but there must be an easier way. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Today I have drunk a lot of tea and made a barman sad for ordering tea instead of cider or beer, I'm so cold!
