Film Club | May

May feels like it was such a long month, I can't believe how much it feels like time has passed since watching last month's first film. I think I was feeling a lot more inspired this month and made a little more time for movies. I guess because I was trying to catch up with Awards Season back in January, it just felt a bit like I had peaked, then again, quality over quantity and this is certainly a slightly better selection than last month.

  1. Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father
  2. Frozen
  3. Open Grave
  4. Mr. Nobody

  1. Godzilla*
  2. The Monuments Men
  3. Oculus
  4. Devil's Knot

  1. The Station Agent
  2. Funny Games US
  3. Oblivion

Most Favourite: Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father This might just be one of the best documentaries I've ever seen and I've been telling just about anyone who'll listen about it. I really urge you to give it a go, it's sad but powerful and demonstrates how truly strong and incredible people can be.
Second Favourite: Open Grave: This is one of those films that I wish, wish wish had a better title, because come on, its title is lame, which is a shame when everything else about is not. It's an amazing twist on the whole 'viral zombie genre' and Sharlto Copley really kills it, there are also quite a few really good twists.

Lesser Favourite: The Station Agent: You know when you like an actor so you seek out what they've been in? In this case IMDB made this mistake, yes I like Game of Thrones, yes I like Peter Dinklage in In Bruges but this film is just not good. It's so slow and boring and Tyrion spends the whole film looking mopey. It's not the worst but it's far from enjoyable.
Least Favourite: Mr Nobody: If length alone were a signal of a bad film, there would be fewer films, this one can go in the bin regardless. I guess it's a film about alternate realities and endless possibilities but given that you're never told where you actually are (maybe you are I didn't stick it out until the end), it's just two and a half hours of darting back and forth. Plus, Jared Leto in old-man-make up, anybody in old-man-make up.

I still feel like I've been a bit dominated by TV, when I really do think I prefer watching films. I have a film night planned with my sister on Friday though so that should bring a few to add to the list. How can I stick to just movies though when, omg, have you seen the latest Game of Thrones, it's been almost a whole day and I'm still reeling. I think by proper summer though most of the shows I love will have wrapped up - Orange is the New Black is back soon though - so I might have a little less choice.

What do you think? Do you feel more invested in television series sometimes?

YFC Berkshire Country Fayre 2014.

I can't believe how terribly miserable the weather has been recently. We were lucky enough to spend at least one day of the Bank Holiday in the sunshine, Moon's poor forehead even got sunburnt, similar to when we were at the same fair last year, will he ever learn?

We headed over towards Theale with our friends Tim and Laura for our second go at the Young Farmer's Club Berkshire Country Fayre. I'm afraid I have to start by saying that the weather really did make a difference and we enjoyed it a bit more last year, just because it was actually warm then and we found ourselves getting a bit chilly.

Also, since the fayre moved this year just a little way up the round the the Englefield Estate it didn't have as much going for it as when we attended the previous year. That said, I was mainly excited that every other person seemed to have a dog and spotting dogs is one of my favourites, especially when their owners are more than happy to let you pet them(!)

I picked up one of those mice for Doll, it's her new favourite thing.

The Flyball was the best thing.

Last time we were a little sad that we missed out on a few of the events but this year there wasn't all that much to miss. Most of the displays consisted of a rushed 'interview' before whatever was on display was swiftly whisked out of the main arena before the 'next act' - no over-the-top 4x4 display for us this year!

The craft and food tents seemed much smaller too, and I think that's a real shame given that was the main reason I was excited to go. I guess there were parts of the day where we found ourselves getting a bit bored, even if it was nice to get out in the sunshine and pet all the dogs. I'm more looking forward to the grand event that is the Berkshire County Show in September now, as well as being excited for the Wealden Times Midsummer Fair in a couple of weeks thanks to winning tickets from Cider with Rosie.

Beale.

We had all our friends from uni over for a Eurovision party last weekend and had pinned our hopes on a barbecue. With the weather being as miserable as it could possibly be, Moon made chilli instead - which then went on to be lunch and dinner for the next three days after everyone left, chilli lasagne though(!) It was such a lovely weekend and so great to catch up.

Not letting the weather 'dampen' our spirits, after a late lunch at Newbury's new sports bar (weird place, no windows, pretty good food), we popped over to Beale Park. I think the price always put me off a bit but it was actually okay considering all there was see there. I'm glad that the gamble paid off as it was certainly a good way to kill a couple of hours in between the downpours.

Who knew this was what mongeese looked like?

Set just off the M4 turn off for Theale, Beale Park is kind of in the middle of nowhere and houses a small but interesting collection of weird and wonderful creatures, from owls to raccoons and even has its own herd of fallow deer. I just really like places with plenty of animals to see I guess and am looking forward to going there again when it's nice weather - hoping that doesn't mean everyone else decides it's time to go there to!

I'd definitely say our Eurovision party was a great success, i may not remember a lot of the contest part but the party might have been one of the best we've hosted in our little flat. Looking forward to Portugal with a few of this lovely lot in just a matter of weeks!
