'Given to the Wild'

So, I'm sat here, giving 'Given to the Wild' its first considered, and long-awaited listen. I'm currently on Glimmer and I think it's pretty much certain that, despite my worries, they've delivered. I wonder whether I would have thought otherwise anyway, I've been a fan for such a long time and I've been waiting for their follow up to 'Wall of Arms' for almost half of that time, but I think I would know if I was being mugged off.

I know what I like and I love this. Maybe they won't keep the fans who jizz all over 'Toothpaste Kisses' and 'Latchmere', and they're great songs too, but artistically, I think it's important to allow a band like The Maccabees to grow. I never wanted to see them play the two same albums forever, and I'm proud that they've taken the time to produce something so beautiful. I'm glad they didn't let me down and I'm psyched to finally have the chance to clue myself up before seeing them in a couple of weeks, another reason why I'm glad that I'm happy with 'Given to the Wild'.

I did try and think of a constructive, proper, official way to write a review, but how could I? How can I be impartial about something I'm genuinely excited and slightly overwhelmed by? I'm basically just letting you know that I love them, which you probably already knew, and that I love this album, which was probably a given (lol).

You can download 'Given to the Wild' on iTunes now.

Sunset.

The sunset was a beaut tonight, I am all packed up and now using GoogleMaps to perve on where we're staying, it looks so good, right in the centre of Hong Kong by Causeway Bay, lovely stuff. Maybe I'm anticipating the trip slightly more, especially since the Wi-Fi has officially been confirmed, I can stay connected, go me!

Dry the River.

This is me very much jumping on Andrew Moon's bandwagon, but that isn't to say I didn't appreciate this band before, I just may have slightly dismissed them, that's all. Moon's post on them can be seen as part of his Glastonbury psyche-up on his Tumblr.

Since listening to Dry the River on our voyage to Glastonbury (via Sidmouth and Bodmin) and then having them technically open my Glastonbury, I can't help but perhaps fall in love with them slightly. I want to begin by saying that they sound much better live than they do on recordings, the energy that they bring to their relatively soft music is beautiful, which is one of the reasons why I'm writing about them now.

I suppose that I am also using this post to have a cheeky nerdgasm over the way the iTunes festival is streamed this year. I thought last year was brilliant because they showed everything rather than lame edits (which in my experience is often what happens with recordings of live music, Glastonbury coverage is terrible for example). However, I had a few issues with their use of Myspace, the first being that nobody uses Myspace anymore and the second was that you couldn't re-watch performances if you happened to be out, so the use of iTunes and being able to watch the performances 'on-demand' is much better, especially seeing as tickets are like gold-dust (she says despite winning tickets for Saturday and Sunday, but just not going out of laziness).
But anyway, to demonstrate how good I thought Dry The River were, I was half-planning, if I hadn't given my tickets away, to just go to see them and duck out on the Manic Street Preachers. I'm also putting this on record that I think that iTunes' policy about 'not sharing' is very unfair, I didn't sell them because I'm not a dick so I don't see the problem. I also didn't win the tickets through the official channel, but that's another story. Also I didn't technically break any rules due to the fact that Moon's brother ended up not going anyway.

Dry the River currently have a single out called, 'No Rest', which is really good but I would recommend you test the waters with the free download they are offering to people that sign up to their mailing list, it's probably my favourite. Arguably Dry the River are within the same vein as Mumford & Sons, but they just aren't. This is coming from a huge Mumford & Sons fan, although overall there is no need for me to justify that, to me, the two sound completely different. However, there's almost no doubt that when Dry the River get snapped up, the mighty Mumford & Sons are who they will compared to, despite their completely different musical and vocal styles. Use of similar instruments, yes; way the similar instruments are used, no.

As a relatively new - although I use the term loosely - band, there is very little in the way of singles to download, however, I am awaiting their debut album with high anticipation due to what I heard at Glastonbury, it's all pretty much solid and good. There are a number of songs to listen to via their Youtube channel though. Here is the eerie video for their new single, 'No Rest'.

Make sure you check out their website and 'fan them' on Facebook, I'm fairly certain that if they're not big, they're going to have a great summer. The BBC already seem interested as demonstrated by an exclusive set at Glastonbury for BBC Introducing - Noah and the Whale also played this and both bands told their fans what was going on and in the end it seemed to be VIP only so we ended up only hearing the beginning of Dry the River over the fence; they also officially played BBC Introducing last year. Finally, if you get the chance also take a look at their iTunes Festival perfomance, I promise/hope that you won't be disappointed. If you're looking to see them in the flesh, they seem to be playing every other festival, including Reading & Leeds, as well as playing a fair number of gigs once the 'festival season' ends (including New Slang in Kingston on 15th September, hint if anyone wants to spend £6 on me).

Grad W/end.

Here are my favourite photos from this weekend.
I really enjoyed myself and am really looking forward to my own graduation now as well as mine and Moon's trip down to Cornwall in the next couple of weeks.
Enjoy how small I am because I always forget, also appreciate my tanlines (thanks Glasto)

LOOK HOW HANDSOME MY BOYF IS(!)

I'm quite happy that I missed The Creators Project for this, a bit gutted I wasn't able to finish off the Malden Fortnight stuff but I've been invited to a presentation on Thursday where I'll be able to meet and be thanked by the committee, I may also get a free meal. Moon says he will be my date .
The best of the rest are on Facebook, I'm going to print out the nicest ones for my friends for when I see them next, also a ton for Moon so Moon's mum can cry with happiness over them.

Ready Freddy.

I am all packed and ready for Glastonbury, only two more sleeps to go now, might be the last big photo post I do before then, hopefully someone from a job I've applied for will look me up in the time I am gone.
I am most proud of these.

I had a bit of fun playing around with my 35mm lens, on the 'Action' setting so I could get some good ones of my cat - iknorite, so original. You might be seeing a lot of 'depth of fielding' (a technical term), from now on as I'm in love with how this lens works. So, so in love.

Made my decision to definitely go and see Mumford and Sons on Friday ♥, lovely, wonderful men, even if it will be crazy-busy.
I've somehow managed to get roped into going to ChessingtonWOF with my sister tomorrow, so I will be asleep by like 9, meaning I will be able to be up for 4, as we are now leaving at 5 instead of 7 - eep.

Finally, lookers; my sister and I are some.

I hope you have a nice week!

Marcus Mumford, your voice makes me melt!

I forgot how much I love this song, I can't believe I only just found the video for it, I might not get to see them at Glastonbury as I'd probably be on my own, but I may brave it just to hear this live again.

I remember seeing them a little over a year ago when they supported The Maccabees at Southampton University, now look at them, it's so wonderful to see something blossom like that, you couldn't even buy a proper single when I first saw them, it was in cardboard and everything. I judge musicians' real popularity on Mums, Moon's mum loves these guys, but I love them more. Wasn't expecting this video to be funny, they seem so deep, then again they do hold barn dances, which I would go to, if they weren't always in London when I am not.
Even if their music wasn't brilliant, I just like the way 'Mumford' 'rolls off the tongue'. ♥
