581.

This has proving to be a lot easier than I thought it would be, here is the beginnings to my new website. It's only the initial template for the moment, as I'm off to Hong Kong tomorrow. But I thought I'd demonstrate that I'm not all talk and that I really am working on it.

I think I could do with re-sizing the buttons, to be honest I'm not really sure about buttons anyway but I thought I may as well. I've 'sliced' it up and it all seems to be working, it's quite nice to be able to do what I want, even if so far it's not particularly innovative or exciting..

I think this would have worked better if I had kept still.

Studio shop.

Those who read my blog will know that the original images are from ages ago, but I thought I'd mess around with them a bit before starting the real work of trawling through the 600-odd photographs I took of Malden Fortnight today. It does serve a purpose as it's a decent image of myself that reflects me and what I do for the 'About Me' on my website.
Stay tuned for my Malden Fortnight photos from today, I think I will do them in sections as there was so much going on, I was out from 10 until half 4. Not that long, but long enough in this heat, it was still fun to be 'the official photographer' though and get asked all sorts of important questions.

The 'interactive' Vanish advert on Photobucket is going to cause me a bit of grief this evening, I can tell.

Stonehenge World.

So, I came across this, I'm not sure how I feel about it. I have grown to like polar-panoramas recently and I would have thought that this would have worked, instead I just kind of think it makes Stonehenge look obese.

0297.

So to kill an hour or so before my mum came down to pick my sister up I took a few photos, I've also had a play with Photoshop...
This photobooth-style image I made is my favourite but I used it in my 365 instead.

In keeping with the foxy theme, here is a beautifully shot video of a fox catching some mice.

Blabber.

I had a pretty interesting afternoon yesterday, I think my exam-widowdom is once again coming to a close, 25 hours from now it will all be over and Moon will hopefully start to relax.

Yesterday was quite relaxing in any case, I sat on Southsea Common with him while he revised and I read horrible trashy magazines. I got sunburnt because I wasn't completely prepared to actually go down there. Then we had a walk along the seafront and home. I even had a paddle in the sea, which was my first time doing so since being in Portsmouth, quite stupid when you consider how long I've been here.

I'm looking forward to asking to do stuff and not being turned down in favour of revision.

All images © Ruth Johnston, 2010. Aside from the ones I obviously didn't take.

I think I work best taking photographs in the sunshine.
I'm so pleased that I have had a few responses for my Half-Chinese project via a Facebook group, there seem to be a couple of members that are interested, so it could shape up to be really good. It would probably be more helpful to use people that I know or that are closer to Portsmouth - due to where the studio is. But I could probably negotiate paying for their travel expenses or something once everything gets off the ground - meaning this project could get expensive, especially seeing as I'm hoping to shoot less on digital for it...

Looks like I'll be temping this summer, I've applied for a few 'photography' jobs but have yet to get a response but I'd like some way of keeping myself busy anyway, paid or otherwise. I'm going to try and keep up the blogging and more of a 'finger on the pulse' of things as well as be a better reviewer, it will undoubtedly help when I come back to doing projects again if I've kept active. Hopefully it will mean that by the end of summer I'll have a bit of a research portfolio to dip in and out of, therefore meaning I may have done most of my work for me when the time comes.

Some images from this morning's reshoot for The Body magazine project.

Photoshopping faces.

Because it appears to be too much hassle to arrange another shoot at this time, and I have very little time to edit everything anyway. Urgh, this hasn't worked out too badly though, and luckily I don't have to do it for anyone else.

One more idea.

I'm basically stealing ideas off of Moon now, but he's helping and if he didn't I'd just be a massive ball of stress.

I think I've cracked the 'red cameras' thing but I didn't really like the idea in a first place.
Also, someone should tell whoever is in charge that the website kind of looks a little sinister...

Anyway, he's my last design for invitations, feel I've done too many.

I tried to incorporate all the colours that were mentioned. I think white a black is a winner really though - this just looks like messing around, although it might look pretty good with a black title.

Initial invitation designs.

Front designs
These are the ones that I think work best out of all the ones I've done, but I'll bring all of them in on Monday.
I prefer the white ones, I think they're much cleaner, I'm not sure what everyone else will think though.

I like this one best.

Back design
A lot of this can't be done until our meeting on Monday and when sponsors etc are sorted out. I don't know what to add or take away. I'm not sure about using that font on the back either, but we kind of need it for continuity...

Space and place.

The theme for this documentary practices brief is space and territory. I have chosen to focus on panoramic images as they can make smaller, intimate spaces seem vast and much bigger than they actually are. I haven't chosen what kind of images I will actually be taking for this set but after reviewing these images, I'm thinking about looking at different spaces at different times of day as it might be interesting to see the impact that people have on one space over the course of a day.
I can produce between four and ten prints so the sorting process should be quite easy once I have enough images to choose from.

Biffy Clyro tonight, I asked them if I could bring my SLR to work for the project but they said no because very few press are even going to be allowed to photograph. Lame. I'm still quite excited though and I can always bring my compact I suppose, they don't need to know that it's 10MP too.
Need to look over things for lecture on Friday and scan it in for the digital RDB... why is everything so hectic. I hope it will calm down when this brief is over and I start the next one, mind you it doesn't seem like many people on the course have even really started this one yet. Not that I've even done loads.
Updates soon.x
